Brain Awareness Week began in 1996 in the United States as an effort to bring together diverse groups interested in brain health with a goal to promote the value of brain research for treatment, prevention, and possible cures. This global education initiative led by the Dana Foundation now has 7,300 partnerships in 117 countries. The Dana Foundation is a private philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing the understanding of the brain and has an excellent website celebrating Brain Awareness Week with interesting articles and engaging activities.

The BC Brain Wellness Program launches registration for the spring classes on March 14/22 with classes beginning on March 28/22. With over 30 classes to choose from, all classes are free but do require registration. Check out  www.bcbrainwellness.ca for details. There is something for everyone!

Here are some easy ways to stimulate and challenge your brain that you can do every day!

  • Learn something new – a new song, a new recipe, a new language, or a new game (do a word search game every day!)

  • Socially connect – meet up with a friend, say hi to neighbors or facetime with family

  • Use your opposite hand to do a simple task like making a phone call or picking something up

  • Change up your routine – eat breakfast in a different chair or walk a different route

  • Feeling good by doing good – create the opportunity to do a random act of kindness
