Falls Prevention Awareness Day is on September 22nd!
by Chelsea Smith
Falls Prevention Awareness Day is on September 22nd and serves as an important reminder of being aware of the risks of falling. Falls are the most common cause of injury among older Canadians and it is estimated 1 in 3 seniors aged 65 years and older are likely to fall at least once each year. Falls can be more harmful than they may seem and cause bruising, head injuries, hip fractures, and other injuries that can have long-term health consequences. Multiple factors may contribute to risk of falling such as lower body weakness, difficulties balancing, certain medications, poor vision, physical obstacles in the environment, as well as cognitive abilities. This day also reminds us to talk to a doctor about the risks of falls and spread awareness to others to promote fall prevention in our community!
Suggestions to help prevent falls (see https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/health-promotion/aging-seniors/publications/publications-general-public/you-prevent-falls.html for more details):
Eating healthy meals
Exercise regularly
Use medication wisely
Use safety aids
Make adjustments to improve safety in your home, such as installing grab bars by the toilet and bath tub to help you sit or stand
