November 30 is Giving Tuesday!
by Susie Stewart
Directly following American Thanksgiving and the shopping frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the annual global event of Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to give back to the charities and organizations that make a difference, using our time, our talent or our treasure.
Organized largely through social media, the goal is to encourage fundraising and volunteering for organizations in our communities. Millions of Canadians take action each year and, in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, people from across the country found incredible ways to make an impact. Here are just a few examples:
celebrating front line staff through artistic expressions in St. John;
raising funds for a charity through virtual cocktail parties in Montreal;
assembling craft kits for kids in Toronto, and
feeding vulnerable people on the Eastside of Vancouver.
As awareness grows, so does activity. Since Giving Tuesday was launched in Canada in 2012, donations have increased over 1200% and, in 2019, $21.9 million was raised online in Canada in a 24-hour period.1
It is a wonderful reminder of how creative and caring we can be. Why not let this inspire you to give of your time, talent or treasure to make a difference this year. For more information or inspiration, go to the Giving Tuesday website.
