June Creator Of The Month: Lise

From day one, Lise grew up in a very arts-and-science-loving household. Her father is a professional artist with his own website and art studio. Lise believes that the arts and sciences complement each other, so it is essential to develop skills in both – she is interested in medical illustration to bridge these complementary passions.

Lise loves all types of art, such as painting with watercolours and sketching. The art piece she submitted to the Creative Collective was the first time she used melted wax crayon. It was suggested to her through the Thrive program, a reaction-therapy-focused initiative, with the Open Door Group. One of the classes she took for fun was a creative arts workshop, with each class focusing on a different medium – for example, mosaic or watercolour. Lise finds these programs helpful as she is able to shut out the outside world and focus on art. For the wax crayon piece, she had no prior expectations going in and found it was a wonderful experience to “just let loose and see what happens”.

Art therapy has taught Lise that you don’t need to be a conventionally “good” artist to benefit from it. Creating art can release the emotions and tensions in your body and mind. Lise further reminds us that pandemics are hard, and the whole world went through a collective trauma; art therapy is an excellent way to decompress, process and move on.

“You can only grow by pushing your boundaries and moving outside of your comfort zone.”
