Let’s Get Creative: Balancing My Needs and Those of the One I Caregive

Instructor Information

Ahava Shira has been exploring these questions since the spring of 2020 when her husband of 22 years was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. A published poet and memoir writer, dancer and multimedia artist, Ahava started to write another memoir, make dance videos in her living room, create mixed media collages with materials she found in the garden and on the beach, and improvise new tunes to her favourite Hebrew songs. Each of these creative expressions offered a different process and path for her to make meaning of her experience, by helping her to express difficult emotions, access inner strength and self-compassion, let go of old beliefs about what she was capable of and tell a new story about who she was becoming. Co-author of Writing Alone Together, a book about the nourishing and restorative power of journal writing in a group, and guide at the Gates of Loving Inquiry, and Tendher, Ahava is passionate about supporting caregivers to access the healing power of creativity and self-compassion.
