Research Seminar Series: Creating New Brain Cells - A Look into Neurogenesis

Join us at our Research Seminar Series on April 5th to learn more about your brain, specifically how new cells are produced in your brain and how this might affect memory and mood. Neurogenesis, defined as the formation of new neurons in the brain, is a complex process of which our speaker, Dr. Jason Snyder, is an expert in. In this session, Jason will walk us through the basics of neurogenesis, how his lab investigates the role of neurogenesis in behaviours such as learning and decision-making, and how functions of neurogenesis in animals might translate to humans.

Speaker

Jason Snyder

Jason Snyder, PhD, has worked as a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia since 2013. He joined UBC after attaining his PhD in Neurophysiology and Behavioural Neuroscience across the country at the University of Toronto. He currently leads the Snyder Lab, a neuroscience lab integrated in the Department of Psychology and the Djaved Mowafghian Centre for Brain Health.

The Snyder Lab studies neurogenesis, the development of neurons, through the lifespan. They aim to use neurogenesis to aid in understanding of the biology of memory and mood. Dr. Snyder investigates neurogenesis from a variety of perspectives. He has led and been involved in research investigating sex differences in neurogenesis, the impact of neurogenesis on choice, decision making, and memory, effects of exercise and stress on neurogenesis, and many more active and novel areas of research.
